May – 2019 Monthly Leadership Session with Kadi Cole Part 1

Kadi Cole has over 25 years of experience in high level leadership and organizational development. In her latest book, Developing Female Leaders, she speaks with us on what it takes and why now is the time to intentionally develop the female leaders around you. Let’s talk about it.

2 Highlights From This Episode

1. Mentors vs. Sponsors

A Mentor talks with you while a Sponsor talks about you.
Mentors can help and coach us but a Sponsor looks around the organization and talks about the up and coming leaders in their peers. It’s much easier for men to create quick relational connections to other men. There are women on our teams who don’t have those natural affinities and may get overlooked. A sponsor expands their horizons and represents all the leaders on their team. As a leader you are responsible for all the potential that God has brought to you.

2. How does a female leader bring up these difficult conversations?

It’s not easy but it can be done. Most of the change will come from men in places of authority who can unlock the doors for women. Although, as women, we do need to be ready to knock on the door ourselves and help break the old patterns.
The two ways to bring awareness to the conversation is to be honoring & honest.
Being angry or having an agenda will not get you where you want to go and having your facts together, giving concrete examples or bringing in a professional will open true dialogue with leadership. If you’re going to create change you have to be up for whatever that change is and whatever you’re role in it is.
